Scary Mommy lives up to her name in the recent article about all the things that can possibly go wrong when you're traveling with kids.

It's frightening, funny, and a bit sobering to hear about all the crazy mishaps that can befall a poor mom travelling with children.

Here are some of the things you might want to remember… and plan for:

1. Your child will get sick the day you leave – likely with an illness that involves puking or requires antibiotics, or maybe both.

Like when my sister's little girl got car sick multiple times on the 6 hour trip to visit us last year. Sorry Sis. Murphy's Law.

2. You will forget to pack your kid's blankie, lovie, or other irreplaceable comfort item.

You will then frantically search for an acceptable compromise or replacement resulting in spending ridiculous amounts of cash on souvenirs you hope he'll be excited about.

3. The kids' meals at the hotel restaurant will be more expensive than a date night back at home. A couple of margaritas will cost more than your monthly mortgage.

My solution for this one? I order something my son can eat with me and then just feed him from my plate. Restaurant portions are usually too big for me to finish anyway.

4. You will make multiple trips to Walmart or Target for all the things you forgot to pack.

This just can't be avoided. It's become a staple, so much so that when we arrive my husband immediately asks the hotel desk where the nearest Target is located.

5. Your kids will be up at the crack of dawn – every. day.

I'm not really bothered by the early wake up calls, because I'm an early riser anyway. What really gets under my skin is trying to get them to bed on time. It's nearly impossible!

So it's true, all sorts of little things you don't anticipate will go wrong. However, you'll learn to roll with the punches and plan accordingly… at least until the next unforeseen disaster.
