The 5 stages of grief are said to be denial & isolation followed by anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.  Sometimes these can fall in different patterns or sometimes are replaced by other actions or emotions. The loss of a pet is a heavy loss.  Even if you were the one who had to make the agonizing decision to lessen their misery, and are somewhat prepared for the inevitable, you still grieve.  A pet is a companion, a “child”, a best friend, a comfort.  To lose that is to sometimes lose everything; it’s a loss of a life, a loss of routine, a loss of security.
