Would You Breastfeed Someone Else’s Baby?

Before the invention of formula, there were awesome women called wet nurses that nursed other people's babies.  Sometimes these women did it because they saw a child in need, sometimes they were paid and other times not.  I think wet nursing is truly amazing and selfless.

Today, when moms are in need, other moms often volunteer to pump and donate milk to their babies.  Many moms with babies in the NICU benefit from donated “liquid gold.”  Biological mothers are requesting to provide milk for babies that are adopted.  Mothers who have experienced infant loss are choosing to pump and donate milk as a way of honoring their angel babies.

Still, milk sharing and wet nursing has a greater stigma than the one already attached to breastfeeding in Western society.  Despite the stigma, moms are still doing it.

Meet two moms who are nursing each other's children on the next page to see what it's really like.
