The One Thing Parenting Never Does
What do you think? Does parenting ever get easier?
If there’s one thing I’ve heard anytime I dare to complain about the hard work that is raising four little humans (complain? me? never!), it’s this:
“Hang in there momma, it gets easier!”
And sure, I once took that well-meaning sentiment and hugged it to my tired being like a warm and comforting blanket fresh out of the dryer.
If only I can get through the horrific hourly wakenings, I would think to myself.
If only I can see past the nap strikes and the constant potty training accidents.
If only every waking minute didn’t feel like I was being pulled in 1,000 different whining directions.
I clung to the assurances from older, wiser mothers that things would get easier when my children reached those magical ages of sleeping and being able to shower on their own and wipe their own butts. Even as I mourned the loss of the baby stage, I reminded myself now and again that a slightly less stressful (not to be confused with better) time was just on the horizon.
But now that my children are starting to get a little older — my oldest just turned 7 and my youngest is about to hit 11 months, which I realize is not super old but it’s still a different stage of parenting other than the mass chaos of having a newborn or preschooler — I’m starting to see the truth.
Parenting never gets easier.
