Take Yourself On A Date

I invite you to make time for yourself to go out and do something enjoyable. Even if you love your yoga or Zumba class, it does not count in this instance. Going grocery shopping alone also does not count. How often do you delete those amazing Living Social deals from your emails assuming you will never have time to enjoy such things? How many restaurants have you driven by wondering if they have a decent eggs benedict and bloody mary brunch special? Have you ever considered visiting the local zoo, aquarium, or museum alone? It can be vastly different to contemplate the beauty and wonder in this world when solo and not with young companions.  To take your time, read the descriptions, and linger at what interests you most, is a truly rewarding experience.

A hike or nature walk is another activity that is nice to do alone. You would be surprised how many beautiful gardens are in your city, open to the public for strolling and exploring. Take the time to ponder each plant and literally “smell the roses.” If you are near the coast, a simple walk on the beach can be enough to rejuvenate the spirit.

The most intimidating, yet rewarding option, is to enjoy a fine dinner alone. Get dolled up, wearing what makes you feel the most beautiful, and go to a nice restaurant to splurge on one of the most memorable meals of your life. Or, don’t splurge, and just go to a favorite place, or perhaps a new one you have been curious about trying. Take every pleasure in ordering what you like, and tasting each bite with all of your senses. At first, there is an awkward phase, where you might wonder what to do with yourself, without a companion to talk to, or nowhere in particular to look. Resist the urge to bury your face in your phone. Bring along a book, write, people watch (subtly), or just relax and enjoy your food. Let go of what anyone might think.

Often, when we get rare time to ourselves we are tempted to spend it watching a show, staying in, or even spending time with our partners and friends. All of those things are wonderful and necessary, but taking the time once in a while to give yourself extra special attention is a way to really lift your spirit and boost the overall quality of your life.
