Here are some of my favorites:

1. Go ice skating at the community rink.

I love this idea because it's not something we typically think about doing during the summer. Doesn't it sound like the perfect way to beat the heat?

2. Go rollerblading.

Ditch the skate boards and teach your kids about balance with roller blades. I like it!

3. Play with silly string.

The clean freak in me is screaming “not in the house!” Seriously though, we could have an awesome silly string battle in the front yard for about $5 with cans from the Dollar store in varying colors.

4. Play with paper dolls.

First, I'm going to have to find a store that still sells them. I don't think my kids have ever seen them, but it will make for some really novel play.

5. Make homemade ice cream.

There are some awesome recipes for making ice cream without an ice cream maker if you don't have a churn, but you can probably score one at a local thrift shop. Experimenting with flavors and taste testing sounds like a great way to spend a hot summer day!

6. Have a long jump contest.

I'm sure this will burn off some of that energy my boys always have. Maybe then I can get some peace and quiet. Let's try it!

7. Plan a scavenger hunt.

I'm planning ours as a walking scavenger hunt around our historic downtown, fun and educational.

8. Play foursquare.

Remember this game? I can't wait to teach my kids all about it. It's going to be great!

9. Act out a scene from a play.

Here's another educational and fun activity. Bonus points if the kids write their own script. You could even invite Grandma and Grandpa over to be the audience. They'll eat it up and you can sneak off to the closet to eat chocolate.

10. Play marbles.

Another forgotten childhood game. Before I teach my kids, I may have to learn how to play this one myself. I'm pretty sure we can spend at least 1.2 the day figuring this one out.
