By now, perhaps you've figured out that this article isn't actually going to be about mud pies. Well, not literally anyway. Shannon, from Daily Momtivity, shares that her mom always referred to the memories they were making as “making mud pies.” It's a cute sentiment.

As moms, we're always trying to squeeze in enough quality time with our kids. We plan fun activities, take them to new places, share our favorite things, and snap lots of photos with our smart phones. The goal is always to make “mud pies” as Shannon's mom would say. The memories are what's really important.

When I was growing up every now and then my mom would let me skip school and we’d have a fun girls day. We always went to lunch and shopping. My mom always said we were making “Mud Pies”…or memories. I always had so much fun and couldn’t wait to do it with my daughter one day. Well, last week we had a good opportunity and my daughter and I set out to make our own “Mud Pies”.

After doing some shopping at the mall we headed to her favorite Mexican cuisine and beat the working lunch crowd. We dined on nachos and iced tea. It was wonderful. On our way home we spotted her friends just leaving the playground and going back in for math. We told ourselves how lucky we were to be together and not be in school! She declared it the best day ever and I have to agree. Yes, I let my daughter stay home from school on a random day. Yes, I took a day off from work, but her look was priceless. Her smiles and laughter and holding my hand was enough joy for me to do it. If I could do it again tomorrow, I would…making Mud Pies. We sure did make our own Mud Pies and we already made plans for the next one!!

My mom would occasionally let me skip school in the spring if I hadn't been absent much. Those special days spent with my mother were always worth it. When you get the chance, definitely take some time to “make mud pies” with your kids. School and work will wait a day, I promise.

Go out and make some Mud Pies! You’ll be so happy you did!
