Catherine at Better Nutrition is certain she can help those of us who are battling the dreaded “slow metabolism”(aka those of us who like cake and Doritos).

She suggests we follow her 3 steps to reverse the direction of our metabolism and boost weight loss. Perhaps what's promising about this theory is that it's not a quick fix (sorry), it's a lifestyle change.

Here's what she suggests:

1. Identify the slow metabolism trigger.

To make an analogy, think of your body like a house. If you’re not making enough money to pay your electricity bill, what do you do? Well, you turn down the heat in your house to compensate, as well as you may not turn the lights on as often or fail to perform regular maintenance. The body operates in a similar way

  • Not eating enough food
  • Not eating enough carbohydrates

She's got to be kidding right? I thought we were supposed to eat fewer calories. Besides, isn't “carbs” a dirty word these days?

Any method that will help me lose weight and allows me to eat more food sounds pretty good so far.

2. Support the slow metabolism trigger with food.

Once you’ve discovered the cause(s) that are contributing to your slow metabolism, it’s time to make some changes. The longer you’ve had a slow metabolism, the more causes you are likely to find yourself with, and the LONGER it will take to turn it around.

Basically, this step means it's not going to happen quickly, but it will happen if you focus on filling in the gaps that triggered your slow metabolism in the first place.

I have to admit that I got pretty excited when I read “support with food.” Finally! A way to lose weight that doesn't involve rabbit food and feeling deprived! However, she's not talking about cupcakes and doritos. She's not even talking about Diet Coke.

3. Be consistent and patient.

Be patient with your body. You don’t get a slow metabolism overnight, and a recovery won’t happen in a day, week, month, 6 months or even a year in some cases! Understand that your body is doing the best it can to re-balance and find homeostasis once again.

I know this is probably the most important step, but it's also the hardest. We want quick results. We're used to getting what we want really quickly. Hopefully, making changes like this will have other, more immediate effects, like making us feel better, giving us more energy to chase our kids, and more stamina while doing it. What do you think?

There's a lot more to the method. Check out the rest of the steps to reverse a slow metabolism complete with link ups to research and all the helpful information you'll need to get started at Better Nutrition.
