It’s getting close to Earth Day and I thought I’d share a little secret with you that is truly a win-win. You can help the environment, clean things up around the house, and while you’re at it – make a little bit of extra money in the process.

Did you know that you can get cash for recycling scrap metal? I didn’t have a clue until my husband mentioned it. It was definitely news to me.

When we first got together, he would get up early on Saturday mornings and take some things to the scrap yard. Never really made much sense to me, but whatever… It was his thing, not mine. I actually didn’t pay all that much attention to it until after we moved all of my stuff up here.

I was sorting through some things and had made a few piles around me – one of things that could be donated, another for garbage – the usual. My husband walked over and mentioned not to throw away anything that was metal.  It actually hadn’t even occurred to me that I was, for all intents and purposes, throwing away money.

So, I made a third pile and started putting anything and everything that was metal in that pile. I did my duty as a good wife and humored my husband, in the process, making us just a little bit of extra cash.

Here’s the thing – if you look up “scrap yard” or “scrap recycling” in your local Yellow Pages, you’re bound to find a yard near you. I mean, I’m sure there are certain geographical areas where these types of businesses are more scattered. Around here, though, they’re everywhere. I know of at least six just within a half hour or so radius of us.
