Free Range kids?

I can just see the therapy bills piling up after we allow our children to decide any of the following:

  • What’s in a name?  Sure, Picabo is a great name and she is a world-class skier.  But do we want our future President to be named “Itsy-Bitsy”, “Batman” or “Princess Consuela Banana-hammock”?
  • Hygiene.  If that decision was left up to our kids, they would never shower or brush their teeth, let alone clean their rooms.  We’d have a society of smelly, toothless wonders running the world.  I can only hope I’ve left this world by then.
  • Mealtime.  Cake for breakfast, cookies for lunch and chips for dinner. Yes, that sounds awesome!  High blood pressure at 11 years old?  Not so much.  Higher rates of diabetes due to sugar intake? Yeah…..no.
  • Drug/Alcohol usage.  In addition to their high blood pressure, they are now drunk or high or both – their retention rate would plummet and grades would drop like flies.
  • Driving Age.  Left up to our kids, the legal driving age would be abolished and a “Once-you-can-see-over-the-steering-wheel” mandate enacted.  You think there are bad drivers on the road now, just wait.
  • Sex.  Don’t even want to go there.

We end up with ignorant, stinky, toothless people with poor eating habits and awful first names.  When will the madness stop?!
