Tip#1: Make physical contact

Now when I say this, I don't mean hitting. By making physical contact, try placing your hand on their shoulder, give them a hug, pat them on the back or give a high five. This will get their attention and actually create a sense of contact versus verbalizing.

Tip#2: Command

Sometimes the obvious and direct approach is best. When your child is not paying attention, try stopping them in their tracks by using a stern voice and state “ Can you focus on my voice and pay attention to what I am saying”? Command their attention!

Tip#3: Motion to them

Create some kind of secret signal that you can use anywhere without anyone realizing. It is not fun, when in public to try and get their attention across a room full of people and you end up sounding like a lunatic! Visual signals get my son's attention faster than verbal as he tends to tune me out. Try waving your hands, giving an eye signal, clapping your hands, whistling, or tapping your chin. Do something that they understand and know you mean business.

Tip#4: Verbalize and Acknowledgment

This has worked for me before and still does. When nothing else seems to work I will verbalize and demand acknowledgment. Try saying in a normal tone of voice, “Clap once if you can hear me.” He or she may reply with a “one clap”. If that doesn't work try saying “Clap twice if you can hear me.” The more you do this your child will eventually respond and you will have their attention.

Tip#5: Countdown Time

Now this one works for some but makes me laugh because I have tried this and my son just counts down with me.. This has worked for my friend though! Try to use a count down system by saying”You have until five to be ready for (whatever your commanding)……. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.” Start a count down at whatever number you think your child needs to be ready. For example, start with 5, 10 or 15 depending on the activity.

Hopefully these tips will help you as they have for me!
