#3. Presents

We all love presents! Getting something you wanted without having to buy it is nice. Knowing that someone cared enough about you to think about what you might like and then go find and purchase it for you is even better. Presents are great no matter how old you are. We love getting them and we love giving them. It feels good to watch someone you love open a present you chose just for them.  You watch in anticipation as they carefully unwrap the paper, glowing from the inside out when you discover they love it as much as you knew they would.

Presents are way better than that with kids! They don’t just enjoy getting presents, they LOVE it! Children jump up and down with their hands held out, waiting to receive a gift.  Then, they tear the paper off with wild abandon and hold up the new gift as if it were a trophy. The look on a child’s face when he opens a holiday gift can cheer up any Grinch.

#2. Lights

I don’t really have anything against Christmas lights, but after a certain age I just stopped noticing them. Adults are generally so busy traveling from one destination to the next that we don’t pay much attention to holiday decorations. Children are different.  They notice the little reindeer by the porch, the candles in the windows, and the snowflake lights.  Not only do they notice them, they get excited about them. They want to see more. Soon, you’ll find yourself searching for Christmas lights to point out to them. Before long, you’ll be just as excited as they are.

#1. Santa Claus

Before my son’s first Christmas, my husband and I talked about Santa. I was convinced we should skip the whole tradition. I was afraid it would send the wrong message.  I was afraid he would inadvertently learn presents were the most important part of Christmas.  My husband fought for Santa Claus. I don’t often say this but, he was right.  The legend of Santa contains a ton of Christmas magic! There is no parallel to the excitement my son experiences when he sees Santa or one of his elves.

Although I was originally against the whole Santa masquerade, I excitedly prepare for Santa with my son and love every minute of his Christmas morning joy whether I get the credit for it or not.  My house when Santa visits (even if I know my husband ate the cookies and I stuffed the stockings) is so much more magical than it ever was before! It has made Christmas a thousand times better!
