There's a clear focus on achieving in our society. We often push our kids to be the best – at anything, at something. We know in our hearts that being “best” or “perfect” isn't really all that important, but we push anyway.

What if we spent just as much time focusing on teaching our children to be kind and loving as we do teaching them to strive for perfection? If we did that, we might be living in a different world.

In fact, if I'm being honest, I don't think a lot about my kids being kind unless we're in a setting with lots of other kids. Then I start spouting phrases like be nice!, share!, that's so sweet!  At home, I just don't say those things too often. I'm sure that can't be teaching my kids to be kind. It's more likely that I'm showing them they should be nice only when people are watching.
