Stop Pushing Your Kids To Be…

When we began our childcare search, I remember a strange bit of advice an older mom friend gave me. She said to look out for care providers that focused on education or putting the kids into a school-like routine. She urged us to find a provider who was more concerned with fostering play, imagination, and providing lots of love.

Her advice made me suddenly aware how many child care centers claimed to be “preschools” in our area. It opened my eyes to statements I had previously thought benign and even positive. Things like “we will get your child ready for kindergarten” and “early curriculum for gifted babies.” I also became painfully aware that none of the centers we looked at mentioned loving their kids, providing free, unorganized play, or helping children to explore their natural abilities and interests.

I really think we need to stop pushing our kids and give them time to grow on their own.
