How many of these are you doing as a working mom?

1. I never let the kids see me be upset to leave them.

When they were younger, there were certainly times when I would close the door as I went on a business trip and almost melt down. Particularly during that exhausted, young kids stage… which coincided with my exhausted, new research analyst stage… which further coincided with a time during which I was nearly terrified to fly. Ah, the good old days. But I would hold it together at least until I got out the door. And I never, ever complained about work in front of them.

I can definitely relate to this one. As hard as it is some morning to drop him off, I make sure he never hears me whine or complain.

2. When they had real health challenges, I dropped everything.

I mean, everything. When my son was in the hospital, I didn't leave the hospital until he left the hospital. When my daughter was confined to a darkened room for her concussion, I was confined to the same darkened room for her concussion. I was grateful that I had built the kind of career that enabled me to do this.

This is totally how I roll. When I get a phone call from daycare, I'm out of there and I'm at home – even if that means bringing work home – until my son is back to his usual happy self. If that means taking 3 days off, then so be it. Luckily, that's perfectly acceptable and understood where I work. Our kids come first. Everything else can wait – and if it can't, it can be done at home.
