Do Your Kids Know What To Do If They Get Lost?
In light of the recent “free range” parenting trend and the fact that June is National Safety Month, it's important that we ensure our children know what to do if and when they get lost.
A quick search of Pinterest can help you learn how to use a temporary tattoo to put your phone number on your child's arm. There are free safety kits to use if your child goes missing that can help law enforcement locate them should the need arise. But do our kids know what they should do?
We spend a lot of time telling them not to wander off. We tell them it's dangerous and we scold them when they stray. We teach them the way home in hopes that they won't ever be lost… but what if it happens? What if your kid gets lost? Would he know what to do next?
I can still remember my mom teaching me how to dial 911 if there was an emergency and how to perform CPR should the need ever arise. I don't remember her teaching me how to get help if I was lost. I don't remember her showing me what to do. In fact, I'm sure that my son wouldn't know what to do if he were to become lost. Of course there are precautions I can take, like the ones mentioned above. How do I teach him though? What do our kids really need to know about getting lost and getting help when they're lost?
