1. Conflict Resolution – Who better to call in for a de-escalation attempt than a mom, seriously? Any mom who’s had more than one child in her care for any length of time totally rocks at this. Think about it this way – if you can reason with a toddler, you can almost certainly handle anything that an adult can throw at you.

2. Delegation – Who wants to do the dishes tonight? No one? Okay, no dessert for anyone tonight then. Can you delegate? If you’re a mom, you’ve got this one in the bag.

3. Time Management – I know very few people that can manage to accomplish more in a single day than a mom can. Consider yourself schooled the moment that you bring your precious little one home from the hospital. If you ever want a clean house or a shower again, you’ll learn to multitask almost immediately.

4. Leadership – The awesome thing about being a mom is that you automatically gain leadership experience. You become responsible for another person and strive to be a good role model. After all, you know what they say “practice what you preach.”

5. Organizational Skills – You work at home, don’t you? I’ll bet you keep everything organized and running smoothly. Day after day, you keep everyone on track and doing what they’re supposed to doing. As a mom, you are the office manager – or should I say home manager in this case.

6. Project Management – Today’s project is putting together a scrapbook for your little one. Think you can handle that? Don’t forget to plan exactly what you want the end result to be, make a list of supplies that you’ll need, and then schedule each individual task accordingly. That’s easy enough, right? This is actually hilarious to me because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used binders and sheet protectors to plan and organize projects at work – our safety books are basically nothing more than rudimentary scrapbooking.

7. Accounting – Do you balance your checkbook? Do you stick to a budget? Good for you. You’ve got yourself some entry-level accounting experience right there. Sadly, I do more accounting at work than I do at home these days. Who would’ve thought?

8. Discipline – I’m fairly certain that moms know what the most effective forms of discipline are. Although the means may be different, the end result is virtually the same. A lot of companies use some form of progressive discipline to deal with employee issues – the first time you get a verbal warning, the second time a written warning, etc. It’s not much different than telling your little one no the first time and taking away a privilege or giving them some quiet time after that.

Do you have a few mom skills that are also management skills? Leave a comment and add to the list.
