4 Ways To Gain Respect As A Woman In The Office
Thanks to FabFitFun.com for bringing us these awesome Woman In The Work Place tips and advice to be treated with respect! All of these points are very important to keep in mind.
1. No Catty Comments…Or Gossip At All
We’re not going to tell you gossip isn’t fun; it feels good to know all the juicy details of the office inner workings. But the more you gossip about your female coworkers, the more you bring them down and make yourself look bad. Draw the line. Redirect the conversation when lunch conversations take a turn to your fellow female workers.2. Ask More Questions
When you’re working on a female team and a coworker launches an idea that sounds less than awesome to you, resist the urge to shut her down and try asking a few questions to redirect the conversation. Some examples could be, “Have you thought about the consequences of this approach?” or “What other solutions or ideas did you consider before arriving at this one?” These questions open up a larger conversation without making anyone feel instantly inferior.3. Find a Mentor (Or Become a Mentor)
Having a fellow female to bounce ideas off of who has achieved workplace success can inspire you and help you navigate the often-difficult waters of the workplace world. While mentor-mentee relationships do not happen overnight, find a woman in your company or in business you admire and ask her to lunch or coffee. The worst she can say is no and the best she can say is yes.4. Don’t “Eat Your Young”
There is a saying in many high-pressure jobs that those in power have a tendency to “eat their young” — that is, behave aggressively, insult, or purposefully block the successes of new or young employees. While it can be easy to resent the up-and-coming new hire, remember there is more than one pathway to get to the job you want and it doesn’t have to come on the back of another woman. While you don’t have to be best friends with anyone, it’s important you don’t try to put someone down if you feel threatened.
