Memory-Keeping Mama-Style

1. Use pockets – These days, there are so many options for pocket-style scrapbooking. Take a look at your local craft store. These are great because they’re so simple – an album, a kit, some page protectors, and a pen. If you have the space, you could put everything together, leave it out on your desk, and fill it in as you go through your day-to-day. It only takes a few minutes as you walk by – add a few photos, make a couple notes, etc.

2. Go digital – There is an ever-growing list of companies offering various types of photo books. I did the little guy’s baby book with an app called My Social Book on Facebook – I created a group, posted pictures and updates throughout the first six or so months every few days, and then had it printed. I ended up with a softcover book of the highlights of our first six months. I’m still doing something along these lines right now.

3. Try blogging – Prior to having the little guy, I documented my pregnancy on my blog. Each week, I posted on update with a picture and a paragraph or two about what I felt like and what I was up to. It only takes a few minutes to upload a picture and type a quick update. Don’t over-complicate it. This is one of my favorite things to look back on. It’s also a great way for friends and family to keep up with your growing little one.

4. Keep a journal – You could always pick up something along the lines of a sketchbook or Moleskin journal and some adhesive. Make sure whatever you choose is acid-free, of course. You can add photos and make notes directly in your book. This is extremely simple and inexpensive.  It’s practical as well – you could just toss it in your purse and update it when you have a few minutes here and there.

5. Don’t forget to hold on to all of the memorabilia that comes with having a little one too – hospital bracelets, those first footprints, etc. I made a point of writing down his height and weight at each doctor’s appointment, milestones he’s reached, new foods we’ve tried, which toys are his favorites, and how many books we’ve read thus far.

Here’s the thing, though – how you choose to go about memory-keeping isn’t what’s important. What’s important is that you’re actually doing it. At the very least, make sure you’re taking pictures and making notes, even if you’re not doing anything else with them at the moment – you can always figure that part out later.

Do you have a means of memory-keeping that’s working well for you? Share it in the comments. I can’t wait to hear how you’re keeping track of your growing little one.
