He probably “swept” you off your feet.  Flowers, little gifts, jewelry and love notes abounded.  He may have even quoted Shakespeare from early on in the relationship.  It is so very easy to get sucked into this type of situation, and unfortunately, difficult to get away from.  Along the way, he changed into a critical, domineering personality, coated in sugar.  He demeans you, but in such a way that you question whether or not he actually insulted you.

You, my dear, have been bamboozled by a narcissist. Although they only make up approximately 6.2% of the population, they can wreak havoc on 100% of you and your relationships.  This personality disorder occurs more in the male population.  His parents probably made him feel like he was the “end-all, be-all” of their world, and he has never moved past the high of being constantly praised and doted upon.  You are expected to put your wants and needs to the side in order for his needs to take center stage.  He may cater to you, but in such a way that it benefits him.

The traits that make up a narcissistic personality disorder are on the next page. Check them out.
