I did all kinds of “me” things before my son was born… pedicures, working out, wine tastings, and hiking trips. Then, after I became a mom, I found myself having to choose between spending my hour of free time at the gym or …I could spend it playing dinosaurs with my little man.  I looked into that little face and my choice was made.  Sure, I felt guilty about not working out. After all, I have a post-baby belly I’m not exactly thrilled with and I’ve read all the articles about how I need to “carve out time for myself.”

When my son was almost two, I finally decided to make some time for myself. I went to a two hour kickboxing class. I left with a smile on my face and I felt better than I had in a long time.  I was hooked. It wasn’t the kickboxing, although that was fun, it was the time spent doing something for me.  I can’t always get two hours for kickboxing on Saturdays, but I am learning to squeeze in some small activities just for me.

If you’re not sure how, but you know you need it…. These quick mom’s time out ideas are just for you:

  1. Paint your nails

As a mom, we often go out the door without even brushing our hair. We traipse around town in yoga pants and hoodies with our hair in a “messy bun.” It’s okay. I do it too. We all do it. Take a few minutes and paint your nails. It doesn’t have to be salon quality, but you’ll feel better about yourself and it will give you that few minutes you need to breathe and be yourself.

  1.  Read an article

Read an article online or in a magazine. Something that will make you smile and laugh. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it’s something that will make you happy and give you a break from the endless to-do list playing on repeat in your head.

  1. Have a cup of coffee (or tea)

Hot drinks like coffee and tea are great. They don’t just give you the caffeine you need; they require you to slow down.  Coffee is best hot and because of that we must drink it before it cools.  Taking the time to drink that soothing liquid can give you the break you need from all the crazy in your life.  There’s just one rule here: no to go cups. Drink your coffee from a mug. Trust me it tastes that much better.

Do you have more quick ideas for getting a break? I’m always in need of new ideas, so share yours in the comments below.
