I come from the “clean your plate” generation, so it's tough for me to let it go when my son won't eat his dinner.  I find myself becoming frustrated, even if I know he had a big lunch or that he chose healthy snacks all day.  It's hard for me to justify letting him leave the table with food on his plate, especially if he's declined everything in an effort to get down from the table rather than taking a “courtesy bite.”

But research is starting to show that we really shouldn't be forcing our kids to eat when they aren't hungry.  Why is it a bad idea? Find out on the next page.
