Being A Mommy Blogger

Here’s what I love about being a mommy blogger:

1. The schedule rocks! I spend a few hours a day writing articles and promoting myself. The rest of the time I get to spend with my kids. When I worked outside the home, I didn’t actually spend 8 hours “working.” I was away from my kids for nine hours because of the commute, and part of the time I was out of the house wasn’t spent working so much as waiting for meetings, lunch breaks, time between sessions…. There was a lot of down time when I sat at my desk and wished I was home with my kiddos. Now when I work, it is actual work the whole time.

2. I have a voice! My husband will tell you that I have always had a voice. I have no problems voicing my opinion at home. I have lots of them and I share them all with him. Having a platform like blogging gives me a space to talk about things that are important to me with other people who actually care instead of torturing my husband while he tries to watch football.

3. The feedback is pretty cool too. Not only do I have a voice, I have readers. I love it when people comment on my articles and share my work with others. Sometimes my sister calls and says “One of my friends just shared your article on Facebook and I didn’t even tell her about it.” It’s pretty cool to know that the stuff I’m writing about is starting conversations all over the world. When it’s a really important conversation, it makes me feel that much better.

4. I’m getting paid to do this. As much as I love blogging and the aforementioned advantages, I probably wouldn’t be able to write as often as I do or spend as much energy as I do if I weren’t being compensated. I love that I’m able to contribute to our family in a financial way while staying home with my children. Blogging has afforded me many things, and it’s helping us to afford things for our family too.

5. Writing was always my dream. When I was a little girl my grandmother asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I remember considering the usual choices like mommy, princess, and ballerina before settling on writer. I decided at an early age that I wanted to be a writer. After I had kids, I lost sight of that dream as new responsibilities displaced my personal goals. I’m so glad that I have returned to writing through the colorful world of mom blogs.

There are some drawbacks sometimes. When you put yourself out there on the internet, not everyone is going to agree with you.  You have to develop a tough skin and take some things with a grain of salt. After all, your readers don’t know the whole story; just what you write. Sometimes it’s hard to decide if a story is “too close to home.” In the end, I usually err on the side of caution. All in all, being a mommy blogger is a fantastic job with lots of advantages. The field is growing every day. Have you thought about starting a blog?
